Incorporating SOSI-M and COP-R into Clinical Practice

This course will focus on the theory, administration, scoring, and interpretation of the Structured Observations of Sensory-Motor Integration (SOSI-M) and the Comprehensive Observations of Proprioception (COP-R) and their relationship to other assessment tools and observations. The SOSI-M is an assessment for children between 5 and 14 years of age based on Dr. Ayres’ clinical observations, standardized scores in a national sample (USA) and numerous pilot studies in more than 5 countries. Through the use of videotaped cases, hand-on experiences and didactic presentations, this hybrid workshop will help participants identify motor planning and postural control issues related to vestibular and proprioceptive functions impacting performance and participation. Thus, targeting interventions with children with developmental disabilities e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Coordination Disorders and Sensory Processing Disorders The SOSI-M includes 14 observations that allow therapists to expand their field of action in the diagnosis of sensory-motor problems in children and preadolescents. The COP-R is an observation-based instrument that includes the analysis of 18 items and is one of the first instruments to measure proprioception in the clinical setting. Both instruments allow therapists to obtain and report additional results in the areas of postural control, motor planning, and vestibular and proprioceptive processing. In this course the authors will guide participants in the administration, scoring and clinical interpretation of the results obtained with both instruments. This course must be passed with 75% on a multiple-choice exam.
- Describe the theoretical foundation and measurement of all the items in the SOSI-M and the COP-R
- Relate the findings of both instruments to other standardized tests commonly used in clinical practice with children with sensory processing problems
- Administer all items of the SOSI-M and COP-R using standardized procedures
- Convert the general scores of the SOSI-M and the COP-R into more valid scores for the interpretation of items, scales and total score
- Apply a clinical reasoning model to start planning intervention based on the findings of both instruments.
This intermediate course is designed for occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech and language therapists who have or are currently treating children. - Interpret the results of the SOSI-M and COP-R in conjunction with other assessment tools
- Discuss the results of clinical observations and how they improve unstructured observations

Participants will earn 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours). Course participants must complete the learning activity (quiz) at the end of the course and achieve a score of 75% or higher to receive CEUs.

Erna Imperatore Blanche, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA is Co-Founder and Co-Director of Therapy West, Inc., a pediatric clinic specializing in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and Clinical Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California – Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. Her teaching, clinical, and research efforts have concentrated on the impact of sensory processing on participation including the identification and evaluation of sensory processing challenges, areas on which she has authored and co-authored multiple publications in English and Spanish. Dr. Blanche has lectured extensively around the globe, becoming internationally recognized as an expert on these topics. In her multiple roles as professor, international lecturer, and clinician, Erna crosses the borders between clinical practice and academic research. She has received multiple state, national, and international awards for her work.
Gustavo Reinoso, Ph.D., OTR/L is an Associate Professor at the NSU Department of Occupational Therapy. He has been a clinician for over 25 years assessing and treating children and youth with disabilities in a variety of government, private practices, schools, university, and community settings. He has authored and co-authored several publications and regularly presents his work internationally. He is an expert in sensory processing and integration and regularly delivers education and services to clinicians and families in Europe, North America, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. His research interests include sensory integration and processing, autism, children and youth, handwriting measurement and statistics, disability studies, and the development of assessment tools.
Dominique Blanche Kiefer, OTD, OTR/L, BCP is a co-owner of Therapy West, Inc in Los Angeles, CA and Therapy West 2, LLC in Orlando, FL. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Brown University and also holds a Master’s Degree and an Occupational Therapy Doctorate from the USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. She has been a clinician for almost 20 years, providing treatment to children in the school, home and clinic setting. She lectures extensively in Spanish and English and has co-authored several publications. She is recognized as an expert in the assessment and treatment of sensory processing and sensory integration from both a school-based and clinic-based perspective. She was one of the original authors/directors of the video “A. Jean Ayres: the pioneer behind sensory integration” and her interests continue to focus on sensory integration, sensory processing and the development of assessment tools.
