This course addresses the functional impact and complexity of the demands of a child’s occupation. is intended for occupational therapists service providers will focus on the clinical reasoning process utilized in identifying, evaluating, and intervening with children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The presenter will use lectures, case vignettes, video analysis, large and small group discussions, and guided exercises to convey principles of sensory integration theory, neurodevelopmental treatment, and other approaches geared toward addressing the participation issues presented by children with autism spectrum disorders, neuromotor disabilities, sensory processing disorders, and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Additional emphasis will be placed on classroom, home, and group interventions. Each module focuses on different approaches and can be taken separately depending on the participant’s interest.

Each module must be passed with 75% on a multiple-choice exam to receive credit for that module. The entire series is 8 hours. Current modules are below:

Clinical Reasoning Model (Asynchronous, 1 hour)

Basics of Combining SI Theory and Treatment with Other Approaches (Asynchronous, 1 hour)

Combining SI Theory with Neuromotor Interventions (Asynchronous, 1 hour)

Combining SI Theory with Behavioral Approaches in Different Contexts (Asynchronous, 1 hour)

  • Describe the influence of several intervention frameworks in pediatric practice
  • Relate the intervention practices of Sensory Integration theory, neurodevelopmental treatment, behavior management, and executive function to each other to prepare evidenced based interventions
  • Learn to use clinical reasoning in case analysis to deliver occupation based interventions that employ a combination of several intervention methods
  • Apply a clinical reasoning model and plan intervention based on the findings of multiple assessments

This intermediate course is designed for occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech and language therapists who have or are currently treating children. Accommodations can be made for learners with special needs. If a course participant requires accommodations, please send an email to sensorymetricsllc@gmail.com indicating the course title and the accommodation requested.
